Why you wake at 3 am, and how to drift back off

You fall asleep easily enough. Then, somewhere between 2 and 4 am, your eyes snap open. Your mind starts on tomorrow's to-do list, and the harder you try to sleep, the more awake you feel. If that's you, you're in very good company.

Why it happens

Your stress hormone, cortisol, naturally begins to rise in the early hours to get you ready for the morning. When stress is running high, that rise can start earlier and sharper, which is enough to tip you from light sleep into fully awake.

Hormones play a big part too. As oestrogen and progesterone shift through perimenopause, sleep often gets lighter and more broken, and night sweats can wake you even when you don't remember feeling hot.

What helps you drift back off

  • Keep the room cool, dark and a little on the cold side.
  • Don't check the time. Clock-watching wakes your brain right up.
  • Try slow breathing: in for four, out for six, for two minutes.
  • If you're still awake after 20 minutes, get up and read something dull in low light.
  • Go easy on wine and late caffeine. Both fragment sleep in the second half of the night.

Waking at 3 am is usually your body asking for a calmer evening, not a stricter bedtime.

Where a nightly ritual fits in

Our Night Gummies combine KSM-66® ashwagandha, which helps the body manage everyday stress, with magnesium glycinate and L-theanine to help you unwind. There's no melatonin and nothing habit-forming, so you can take two each evening as part of winding down.*

One thing to note: if you snore loudly, wake gasping, or feel exhausted every day despite a full night in bed, talk to your doctor. Those can be signs of a sleep condition worth checking.
